Mont St Michel to Bayeux
Ah the joys of motorcycling. We got nailed. Rain, rain and rain and just as we arrived in Bayeux blue skies.
As we left the Mont we were treated to some very impressive views of this amazing place. If anything it was even more imposing set against the granite grey sky.
The rain was so torrential we abandoned the stops we had planned and just headed for Bayeux. Bayeux is a nice place world famous for the amazing Bayeux tapestry that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings. Dated to the 11 th century and preserved in Normandy for centuries.
Much to Robyn’s disappointment and sadly for us its last day of display this year was the end of August. The building that houses it is up for renovation and I understand it is off to London for a holiday.
We decided to forgo heading into the town and like drowned rats we checked into our hotel and got out of our wet gear.
Our room looks like a chinese laundry! (am I allowed to say that)?
The weather looked like it was going to hold so we jumped on the bike sans ww gear and headed to the nearby Normandy Invasion museum.
So well done, the displays and explanations were first class. Part way through our visit they announced a movie would begin soon. Very moving as we watched the scenes of carnage in actual footage of the. Just another reminder of the madness of it all.
Another stark reminder was the war cemetery across the road which had 5000 headstones.
We are very fortunate to have lived in a time of relative peace. I wish these madmen in the world could just stop and think for a minute.
We planned on visiting the old town afterwards but we could see the skies darkening again so we made a hasty return to the bike. Not hasty enough unfortunately as we got hammered again on the way back to our hotel.so another set of gear to dry out. Luckily it was only a few km away.
Robyn had taken a quick photo of the impressive cathedral just before it bucketed down. So that was all we saw of the centre of Bayeux today.
Dinner in the restaurant next door was a fish dish a bit like a boullabaise but thicker and more stew like. Yum.
