Amsterdam
The day dawned clear and fine with temperatures predicted in the mid 20’s. So on with the shorts which I thought I was fine with. So after breakfast we set off on the now familiar walk to the ferry. Over breakfast we booked tickets to the Van Gogh museum but the earliest we could get tickets was 4:15.
So we opted for a canal cruise which we enjoyed and we relaxed in the open boat whilst taking in the sites. We then found a nice place for lunch and watched the world go by on the canals.
Suitably fortified we wandered through the streets towards the museum, it was only about 3km so we could take our time.
We passed the famous flower markets on the way. There was a street with shops selling tulip bulbs. We arrived a little early so more refreshment was taken at the Hans & Grietje cafe.
The museum was fantastic, set over 4 levels it traced his life and works over his active painting years from 1880 until his untimely and self inflicted death in 1990. He was only 37.
Not only were Van Goghs on display but also artists from the same era who influenced and were influenced by him.
Matisse and Rodin were two of the better known artists among them. Just amazing to see this all in one place, the value of this collection I couldn’t even begin to calculate.
On our walk back we found a really nice Indonesian restaurant for dinner and 3 of us enjoyed their signature Rendang.
Then it was the long walk back to our hotel, carefully crossing the many bicycle lanes without becoming a casualty.
A well deserved nightcap at the hotel and our km for the day was almost 16.
Our next car😂
